This is the relation between identity and violenceThis is the relation between identity and violenceThere is no good label to describe Jiddu Krishnamurti, and thats perhaps how it should be.In his early life, he was groomed by the Theosophical Society (a religious movement) to become what they called the World Teacher. As he matured, however, Krishnamurti returned all donations and dissolved the group to move away from any and all ideological affiliations.For decades, he traveled the world giving lectures about human psychology, social change, and the importance of understanding the mind as individuals rather than through authority.Some people consider him a religious leader, but given the modern conbedrngnisation of the term, thats not accurate. Others refer to him as a mystic, which is perhaps a better label, but even so, it doesnt feel complete. Calling him a natural philosopher would arguably be most apt.The thing about Krishnamurti is that he had a way of communicating the abstr act in such a penetrating way that it would shock you into rethinking something you thought you knew.He had a lot to say about the nature of the human mind and its relation to the world, but most of all, he made it abundantly clear that no matter what he said, it should not be taken as truth. Only you, the individual, can come to that conclusion based on yur own inquiry.Similarly, as his approach indicates, he distrusted all labels and distinctions between people. And in his usual way, he showed the logic of this with something he once shared in a lectureWhen you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or partial system he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind.The paradox of living ideologicallyThere are two reasonable ways to respond to this claim by Krishnamurti the first is to put the pieces together and see that, yes, at a core level, identity and violence are connected the second is to, again, see that, but argue even if it is true, unterstellung separations are necessary.What you cant say, however, is that this claim is false, because in order to have violence, you need distinctions, and most violence is born from the ideological distinctions we create.If you take a long view of history, over the course of thousands and thousands of years, every major conflict can be brought down to an ideological battle of us versus them. More interestingly? Almost every side will have claimed that their side is doing the right thing.Everybody thinks that they stand against something something bad whether that be the evil manifested by the devil or the injustice that they see committed by other s in the world.What starts as noble, however, gets clouded by labels and irrational tribal affiliations that we begin to treat as facts, something that we implicitly assume to be attached to some objective part of reality, a process which then gives us the moral high-ground to commit atrocities.Its easy to argue in theory that its harmless to attach a strong national affiliation to who you are, or to proudly and boldly wear your belief system as a badge of honor, and in your case, it may well be harmless, but the broader phenomena in practice is never harmless.At the end of the day, humans are animals highly evolved animals, but animals nonetheless. That means that these identities (borne from our tribal affiliations) are a part of our nature.But to deny you are not participating in violence, however indirect, due to your ideological association is to absolve yourself when you dont have the right to absolve yourself.You can even claim a moral high-ground and say that this level of violence is necessary because the other side is bad, but if you take a closer look at history, youll see that the mere labeling of people, regardless of good and bad, has led to mora suffering in the world than the actual bad committed by the people you are so fervently against.A more integrated understandingThis reasoning can seem cynical, and it can lead to a warped concept of what things like justice and morality are, but there is a solution at least a partial one, if thats your concern.This solution hides in a couple of terms borrowed from the study of game theory zero-sum games and positive-sum games. The former are competitive, while the latter are cooperative.In a world of hard identity labels, you cant help but play a zero-sum game, where the goal is for you to win and the other side to lose where you are the good guy defeating the bad guy.If you do away with labels that define your identity, and instead understand that different people have different life histories, shap ed by different genetic and environmental factors, you can try and align your two different subjective worlds by playing a positive-sum game.It might be true that its in our nature to be tribal, thus identity distinctions, in some ways, are not something we can completely get rid of, but at the same time, we have also evolved to cooperate, and if we change the boundary of who we include in our tribe from just us who are against them to simply everyone, its not inconceivable that we find durable solutions.When we think in identities, we create a one-dimensional world. We reduce the complexity of the universe down to something we can easily wrap our head around. This has its use, but it leads to false dichotomies of good and bad, us and them, and right and wrong.Reality, of course, has more dimensions than just one, and when dealing with it, we cant think in dichotomies, because these dichotomies dont exist. There is no rigid separation.When you are arguing on the internet, the best w ay to describe who you are talking to in this one-dimensional world may well be liberal or conservative or American or Chinese, but in reality, they are just like you people with families, friends, doing the best they can to get by.A world in which we only play positive-sum games, where every player gains something, may not yet be a world within reach, but at least aiming for a more integrated understanding of different people and their realities is surely a better solution than the violence.The takeawayThere is no easy way to summarize what Krishnamurti saw in the world or what his vision of the future was, but one thing is clear he knew that social change begins with an individual.Before you are a label, you are a person, just like whoever it is that serves as an antagonist to your chosen label. Any groups or ideologies that reverse this distinction create violence.Almost everybody has some sort of an attachment to some sort of an identity that conforms to generalized rules of ope ration. Even when we dont explicitly state it, we do often live it.For the most part, these identities and attachments are harmless, but that doesnt mean that we are absolved from the second and third-order effects that come into the world because we like the comfort and the pride and the community that comes with creating distinctions.And while its tempting to think that your ideology is the right one, the one that should be enforced on others, the chances are that this belief is borne more from a self-centeredness you are not even aware of than the fact that you have an objective, moral high-ground.There is no way to get out of this zero-sum game if you begin from a position of establishing dichotomies. The only way to truly win is to understand What makes others different from you? What cultural forces are you not accounting for? How do we better integrate each side?None of this is to say that differences, hierarchies, and distinctions of some kind dont exist in the real world. N either is the point to suggest that its fully feasible to drop all nationalities, religions, and tribal boundaries tomorrow so we can suddenly live in a world of peace.The point is only that we always have a choice Do we continue taking the easy way out, playing zero-sum games, or do we make an honest effort to create positive-sum games?Want to think and live smarter? Rather, many bosses end up in their role as a result of their technical skill and expertise in a certain domain. When individual contributors step into leadership roles without the required foundational skills, members of their team can often find themselves dealing with an ill-equipped manager. If you find yourself dealing with a problematic manager , consider creating boundaries in the following ways Dealing with a micromanager is never a good feeling, especially for those seeking autonomy in their work. If youre dealing with a manager who refuses to loosen their grip, create boundaries between by reducing the opportunities for them to intervene. If you have a project youre working on, rather than asking them how and when to execute a task, do the work, and updat e them on it later. If you know that they tend to overpower you in meetings, consider setting the meeting yourself, and always come prepared with an agenda that will allow you to lead the conversation. Consider only providing updates to them when absolutely needed. It is also important to let your boss know exactly how you enjoy being managed, as they may be totally unaware of your own working style. Unfortunately there are many industries that dont allow you to ever turn off. With the ease of technology, we are expected to fire off emails at all hours of the day. However, if youre not in the business of billing your hours, then it is up to you to create firm boundaries between what you are willing to accept when it comes to your time commitments outside of working hours. If a boss constantly calls you outside of your working hours, simply dont respond. Youre not obliged to answer their calls, nor are you obliged to answer their emails. While this may seem scary, you will set the tone for how your boss treats you. If you have a client thats calling you late at night, simply follow up with a text or email letting them know when its appropriate to call. If you find yourself in a situation where your working hours are constantly being abused, it is up to you to set your own boundaries and say no.Your manager might assign you something larger than you can chew as an act of good faith in your abilities, or even as a stretch assignment . Self-awareness, in this case, is important as you dont want to turn down work that could help you grow, but also dont want to set yourself up for failure. If youre constantly being asked to do work that is out of scope, let your manager know youre feeling ill-prepared, and would appreciate some help or further training. Some people prefer to have a close personal relationship with their teams, which is perfectly okay However, if you prefer to keep the relationship professional and your boss insists on getting personal, you may ha ve to create some boundaries between you both. Do your best not to share personal information while at work. Steer clear of conversations about friends, family, and relationships. Dont socialize more than you need and simply keep your focus on task-related conversationsUnfortunately you may find yourself in a situation where your manager is just not nice . Dont try and be rude back, rather keep your distance, and detach from the relationship as much as possible. Keep your conversations short and minimal and focus on the work. Remind yourself that you wont have this boss forever, and if need be, explore the potential of switching teams completely if things get bad. Knowing what is most important to you at work, and being clear on your own personal values is the first step in developing boundaries with you and your boss. Be honest, and specific with the people around you about how youre feeling, and what your expectations look like ( Tartakovsky, M ). As you work with different char acters and personality styles across your career, youll face the reality that you just wont click with every boss. In fact, its almost guaranteed that youll work with some people who make you cringe, and youll have to complete work that is 100% below you. Air Force Flight NursesAir Force Flight NursesAs he ran toward the airplane, 1st Lt. Charlie Thomas had a kind of wild-eyed look on his face. The blast of air from the planes four huge turboprop engines didnt cause it. It welches the type of gaze only a boost of adrenaline can produce. Once on the MC-130 Talons open ramp, he turned and looked back. A hundred yards away, an ambulance came down one of the narrow roads at Bagram Air Base, islamische republik afghanistan. It trailed a cloud of dust as it headed toward the plane. On the ambulance that sunny Sunday morning was a wounded U.S. Special Forces troop. Hed been hurt the day before in a fierce battle with al Qaeda and Taliban fighters in the Shah-e-kot Valley in eastern Afghanistan. Thomas looked inside the Talon. He was glad to see the plane was ready to carry litter patients and that six medics were aboard. Just as he had ordered. Looks like everythings good to go, Thomas yelled into the loadmasters ear. The burly, M-16-toting load nodded and gave him the okay sign. The medics took the wounded soldier on board. Then another ambulance arrived, and soon there were two more wounded troops safely on the plane. Thomas checked them one last time. By then, two teams of doctors, nurses and medical technicians had taken charge of them. He is quoted telling a surgeon Theyre all yours now. Take good care of em. The men were now out of his hands, so Thomas left the plane. A hundred yards from the Talon, he stopped to watch. As it taxied away, he smiled. Since Thomas, a senior flight nurse, was exactly where he wanted to be, doing exactly what he wanted to be doing. Im deployed where the action is. Right in the middle of the war on terrorism - getting to do my part, and thats a rush. The Talon, from Duke Field, Fla., flew the soldiers to Karshi Khanabad, Uzbekistan. It was the second leg of a long journey that started with a helicopter ride from the battlefield. From K-2, the troops went to the hospital at Incirlik A ir Base, Turkey. Then a C-9 Nightingale flew them to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. From there they went to nearby Landstuhl Army Regional Center for further treatment. And, later, to a stateside hospital to recover. Their journey home began with Thomas. One of three flight clinical coordinators at Bagram, his job is to help platzdeckchen up aeromedical evacuations. He asked for the airlift and made sure the plane arrived with the equipment, medicines, and medics needed to handle the patients. Our job is to get patients to the next level of care. Thomas is with the 137th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard. Called to duty after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he has spent most of his six-month tour at Bagram. He jumped at the chance to serve in Operation Enduring Freedom. Thomas job is one most people dont picture a nurse doing because it deals with flight operations. That job and otherstakenurses away from their more traditional place at a patients bedsi de. For some nurses, like Thomas, its a welcome change, a chance to experience a part of the Air Force with which nurses seldom have contact. But when they trade in their hospital whites for green flight suits, some nurses miss providing one-on-one care. As an active duty flight nurse, Capt. K.C. Vo said Sohonigweinimes you dont see the difference you make because patients are with you for such a short time. A six and a half-year vet, Vo flies with Ramsteins 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, so you dont get to do direct, bedside patient care. Still, theres no shortage of applicants for flight nurse duty. On the contrary. Though the Air Force has problems recruiting and keeping nurses, it has no shortage of flight nurse volunteers. Due to some 3,800 nurses in the Air Force, there are less than 200 authorizations for flight nurses, Capt. Linda Odom said. Shes an active duty critical care flight nurse who serves with Vo. Flight nurse jobs are highly prized - theres a lot of compet ition to get one of the slots, she said. A 12 and one-half year vet, Odoms one of her units 32 flight nurses. Odom, like Vo, serves on an aeromedical evacuation crew. The crew cares for patients en route to and from hospitals. At Ramstein, the evacuation duty falls on the C-9 Nightingale. Final authority On board, the medical crew director - a flight nurse - is the final medical authority. Its up to the nurse to make medical decisions on the spot, Odom said. Theres no staff of doctors to turn to at 24,000 feet. Only if a call is outside your scope, she said, do you get on the radio and call a doctor on the ground. Its a huge responsibility, she said. Few nurses in military or civilian hospitals do that. At Incirlik, Capt. Michelle Maybell makes other types of decisions. Shes a crew manager and has a different focus. Instead of patients, the senior flight nurse takes care of fellow medics. We have a group that takes care of all the needs crews have so they can keep their mind o n their mission. They have to think about their patients. Not about getting equipment and medicine, or how theyre going to get back to their rooms. A reservist with the 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., Maybell deployed to Incirlik shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks. A volunteer, she joined the 43rd Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. As a crew manager, she learns one more part of a flight nurses job. Its a responsibility she doesnt have in her civilian job as a trauma nurse coordinator, but one that will help her do that job better. And though shed rather be flying, what she does is a feel good job. When I alert crews, pack them up, launch them, and go back to help them unpack after a mission, it gives me a good feeling. A sense of accomplishment. When the soldiers Thomas put on the Talon at Bagram were ready to fly from Incirlik to Ramstein, it was Maybell who got the medics ready to fly with them. I know we did our part to make t hat mission a success, she said. Its About Caring While Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Minor are where the action is these days, flight nurses serve around the world. Their job - and that of active duty, Reserve and Guard flight surgeons, aeromedical technicians and flight crews - is to provide patients expert care in the air while en route to a hospital. Thats part of providing service members, Defense Department civilians and their families the level of care Americans expect, Lt. Col. Kirk Nailling said. The 86ths director of operations and chief nurse, he said nurses play a key role in that process. We have plenty of people on the ground around the world who can do on-the-spot life-saving procedures. But then its our job to get them to more definite care. Operation Enduring Freedom is proving that. Each one of the American troops hurt in the fighting in Afghanistan has had a nurse at his side on the plane ride to the hospital. At times like that, nurses and medics bond. That was the case on the first evacuation from Incirlik to Ramstein of troops wounded in Afghanistan, Capt. Brenda Parker said. Another Ramstein flight nurse, she was the medical crew director on that flight. It was camaraderie, cohesiveness, and communication at its best. Ive never seen such teamwork. A team effort. Thats what it takes to provide top-notch care, Nailling said. And that first-class care is something flight nurses hope to provide each time they take to the air. That, he said, is what makes being a flight nurse so rewarding. Thomas emerged from the tiny cubbyhole of a room where he and another nurse called home. It was in the dimly lit and dank cellar of Bagrams Soviet-built control tower. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes because in a few minutes more wounded were arriving. He met all the wounded. It was the only way he could see first hand how badly they were hurt. That was the first step in figuring out what kind of evacuation to coordinate. And as doctors treate d or patched up the wounded, Thomas found a way to get them out of Bagram. His reward was seeing the wounded leave the base, headed for a hospital and then home. To him, that alone was thanks enough for doing a job few - if any - people know about. These guys put their lives on the line for us. Serving them is a thrill. And taking six months out of my life to do that is a small enough sacrifice in comparison to what they do.
